Bahamas Island Hopping

Learn Weather & Passage Planning

This island-hopping expedition through the Bahamas is built around real seamanship, not a fixed itinerary. We depart Spanish Wells and let wind, weather, and sea state determine our route through the Exumas and surrounding islands. Crew are active participants in every decision. Weather modeling, route selection, tidal planning, fuel and water management, anchoring strategy, and daily risk assessment are taught and applied in real time.

Onboard, you learn how to safely and confidently operate a modern 46-foot blue-water catamaran. Sail handling, watch standing, systems management, docking and anchoring, energy and water conservation, provisioning, and maintenance are all covered with the goal of building real competence. This is how full-time liveaboard sailors actually operate.

Between passages, we slow down and play. Freediving over reefs, wing-foiling and surfing when conditions allow, swimming in clear shallows, and exploring remote anchorages are part of the rhythm. Adventure is balanced with education.

You arrive in Turks and Caicos with practical offshore skills, a clear understanding of liveaboard life, and the confidence that comes from real experience—bringing you significantly closer to crewing or skippering your own future adventures.

⛵ Who It’s For

This trip is ideal for:

  • Sailors aiming to strengthen their resume to meet bareboat charter or insurance requirements

  • Sailors looking to gain the experience  required to earn certifications, licenses, or endorsements

  • Aspiring cruisers looking to build confidence in offshore conditions and/or transition to full-time liveaboard life

  • New sailors looking to build the skills necessary to be considered competent Crew

  • Crew looking for an introduction to international operations and the realities of checking in and out of foreign countries

Whether you're preparing for your own bluewater journey or simply curious about the realities of life aboard, this offshore adventure offers hands-on training and real-world experience along one of the most iconic stretches of the U.S. coastline.

🌊 What You’ll Learn

This journey is more than just sea miles — it’s a hands-on, real-world training program covering:

  • Passage planning & navigation

  • Weather routing & offshore decision-making

  • Sail handling & trimming for ocean conditions

  • Watch rotation & night sailing

  • Anchoring techniques & safe harbor selection

  • Liveaboard routines: systems, provisioning, and vessel care

You won’t just observe — you’ll be part of the crew, participating in all aspects of the voyage.

⛵what you can earn

All SV Indie Sky expeditions are led by a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and NauticEd Certified Instructor to ensure safety and top-tier instruction.

Crew Members Receive:
