Medical/Evacuation insurance requirements

As a participant aboard SV Indie Sky, you are responsible for securing appropriate travel, medical, and evacuation insurance that covers both offshore sailing and international travel. Please verify that your policy explicitly includes:

  • Medical treatment abroad

  • Emergency evacuation (including airlift or marine transfer)

  • Coverage at sea — beyond 12 nautical miles or even 150+ miles offshore, depending on your itinerary

🌍 Choose Coverage Based on Your Voyage

Different voyages demand different types of coverage. For example:

  • If you’re sailing to remote destinations like the Southern Bahamas or open-ocean passages, you may need a global evacuation policy that includes repatriation to your home country.

  • For coastal expeditions (e.g., British Columbia or the Caribbean), ensure your plan covers out-of-country care and cross-border access to treatment facilities.

⚠️ Offshore Coverage Notes

Many standard travel insurance plans exclude coverage beyond 12 nautical miles from shore. Some exclude activities like sailing or water sports altogether unless specifically added. It’s your responsibility to confirm these details with your provider.

✅ What You Must Bring

Please bring a physical or digital copy of your active insurance policy with you for the voyage. This may be required by authorities during port clearance or in the event of a medical emergency.
